In response to a very interesting suggestion by captain11, lets see if we can heat things up in this classic argument of VISTA vs XP vs MAC..

HAhahahaha...

Taikor... So sad to tell you that I've lost my geekiness a long time ago... nowadays I can't tell which processors are fast, compared to which generation.... etc etc...

hahaha...

But in the best of my knowledge, Windows 7 looks like the next big thing after XP....
Vista is nice, but only provided its on a desktop and supported by the necessary hardware (which in particular reference to RAM, 4GB is both the minimum to run smoothly, and unfortunately, the maximum effective available for use... so you really can't get optimum performance with Vista)...

Its pretty, but darn bloody slow if you load it in laptop...

64bit.. now thats a totally different world all together..hahaha

Oh,... and to add on..

Vista vs Mac? haha.. like i said earlier,... its not a battle.. its a massacre...

I've seen Mac's interface & reliability & overall general smoothness... its beautiful......
Vista can be programmed to try to follow, but no where near the awesomeness of a Mac ...
hahaha...

Just to bring up those wonderful emotions inside of you phenom..hahaha...

yahHoo!! capt11; actually no war here, we are all peaceful residents  Wink

I agree with you, Vista sucks on laptops. That said..

[1]
You don't earn the 'geekiness' nor do you lose it. Hey, you can be hip and love tech stuff nowadays; just don't do it with all the enthusiasm of geeks, like drooling when you talk or snorting when you laugh  Grin

In fact the fine line between cool and geek is getting thinner and thinner by the day

[2]
I have yet to see 7 in action. Very tempted to try out the beta - think I want to start downloading it tonight.
At any rate will most definitely buy it once it's out, did the same with Vista anyways..

[3]
You know when people buy bigger and bigger cars, they never look back. Of course I don't buy cars very often but I think it applies to OSes for me, once I moved to Vista I never looked back (same as when I upped to XP from ME). I mean, if you want to use your money elsewhere instead of on your PC, just use Win3.11 (or Commodore64, take your pick) and forever hold your peace. If you want performance, UPGRADE!

When XP's out, we rushed out for ATHLON and 1GB RAM. VISTA out, we get dual core, 2GB RAM and DX10 vids. Then come SP1 and we upped to Phenom, 4GB and dx10.1 card. AND VISTA IS RUNNING PERFECTLY SMOooOTH!

Lucky don't really have to use Core i7 for win7. I'm very sure when 7 is out I will learn to love it.

[4]
I love all things Apple. In fact I purchased 3 Nanopods, lost one, still using one and gave one to my ex. I'm only using iTunes for music management. I would love a MacBook - if only its not on Intel.

Just that when it comes to gaming and software choices, sorry Jobs, I'm sticking with the Gates

Ok, think I crossed the geek line with this post.. now to reset to HIP mode  Roll Eyes

kekeke... Phenom.. you're wayyyyyy to knowledgeable for me to give you proper fight.. nowadays I only use my pc to onilne a bit, then save photos & stuff.. no more power processing, big programms, high graphic requirement games... nothing of the sort.... in fact, I only touch my laptop like once bi-weekly, and my desktop probably once or twice a week?

But I try to keep in touch with gadgety things of shiny sorts through Gizmodo.. hehe... love that place..hahhaa

yaHhoo!!

Done downloading 7 beta, gonna do 'upgrade' from my Vista now and keep using it until 7 is actually on retail.

Probably not so smart to do it on my primary PC, but I'm keeping my fingers croxxed.

If I'm not back in an hour, pls help me call Microsoft  Grin

yaHhoo!!

Win7 setup took longer than I thought, probably because I used upgrade option and not clean install, it spent lots of time migrating stuff..

First - those of you who didn't like Vista's interface, haha sorry guys but I'm predicting you won't like 7 too.. the interface is even more modernized for you old guys out there.. will post some screenshots soon. Me? Too soon too tell but i'm sure I will adapt.

Main difference? the taskbar - whichever program/window you open - will only show as buttons and not bar with words on it. [will post some screenshots soon]. Remember the Flip-3D feature on Vista that made WOW but we never actually use? That will come in VERY VERY handy in 7.

Main problem? Setting up is a breeze (although took about 1 hour). Once 'upgraded' all my software (and their settings), documents, bookmarks (Even firefox's bookmarks) etc etc are as if they were there all along. only minor software don't work well yet - like having a few BSOD 5 minutes into boot-up which was fixed with uninstalling AVG 7.5. its working fine - for now..

If anyone's interested I will write more soon..

Interesting... i'll have to go check out the minimum requirements before getting that adventurous... as for the interface with only icons and no words, its like the OS on the MacBookPro... (the one my friend's using)... thats nice... hehehe... need some time to get familiar with icons that you dont regularly use, but otherwise, a very nice improvement...

yes yes... screen shots please..

Hey Capt,

Ya you're rite, I think I downloaded just one day before closing date. But not all's lost, I mean you DO stay in Desa Petaling rite, just pick up the installer from me if you really want, I will make an extra copy for you. You still need to get your own installation key though, its still available free from Windows7 website. Otherwise I'm not sure, it still ask me to activate windows within 3 days upon install.

For your convenience:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx

It's been rough 2 days for me but just want to say be prepared, its still beta so need to be patient with it, google around if encounter issues, I solved most of mine. Win7 for me now is very functional.. smooth music/video playback, gaming framerate ok (all my save games are as they were!) and not much incompatible issues with hardwares..

Heck the excitement is almost like getting married to a new wife.. one that is waaayyy younger  Grin

Good call captain (kinda hate how you force me to call you captain  Grin)

Beta stuff will really make you go nuts for the first couple of days -> you like the saltfish then don' complain the thirst  Shocked

But as I say, 7 is fully functional for me - haven't hit a bug for one full day now - it's almost feeling like a retail release.

If there's one and ONLY one essential upgrade you have to make - is to add RAM. Most of the time the performance boost is more noticable than upgrade of processor since most of the time memory is more of a bottleneck than processor. IMHO low RAM killed the cores.

To share my experience; 1GB makes Vista beg for mercy, 2GB will give is some breathing space - with 4GB (effective 3.2 on 32-bit, depending on your system) VISTA really shines! Also quad core is actually kinda overkill - dual core is sufficient for typical use anyway.

Of course try to maintain relatively low usage on the disk you install Vista to as well - weird thing usually i notice performance drops when harddisk getting almost full.

Have fun at Low Yat  Cheesy

wokey dokes....

Thanks for the tips.. I'll be looking forward to a much smoother & lag free lap top after tongiht...

btw... I've hard a weird situation with my laptop recently, and I wonder, is it due to low RAM?

I go to Youtube, open probably 3 tabs on ie. and then play/pause the videos and hope that they load, but besides taking forever to load, I once experienced that they never load more than 10-15 seconds into the video? Is it because You tube is now streaming HD videos, and thats taking more space in RAM, and when RAM runs out, then you're stuck???
