see, chances are clashes in the living room (for your case) will be lesser but don't forget the interference may happen on the receiving end too.
as mentioned earlier, unfortunately most wireless connection software (especially the one that is built in with Windows) can only show the SSID and not the channel of these stations.
what can you do?
download and install free wifi sniffer software (like NetStumbler
http://www.netstumbler.org/), install it on your netbook then like mr feng shui hold it on your palm and walk around your apartment, checking the available networks and their set channels.
then referring to the table i posted earlier try to figure out which channel you can set to avoid clashing with others.
